The things one finds in Iraq....

David Brackett of the 101st Airborne Division deployed in Baghdad, took this picture of a fellow trooper holding a World War 2 US made M1 Garand rifle while patrolling Iraq in 2008.
Although equipped with the late to postwar rear sight without locking bar, the rifle still has some early features such as the milled trigger guard....

Unexploded Ordnance (UXO) in Bastogne Woods....

While walking thru the Bois Jacques between Bizory and Foy North of Bastogne on May 4th, 2005, I came across this UXO in one of the old foxholes.... No doubt these were unearthed with the use of a metal detector and then irresponsably left behind for anyone to find??!!??
Both items were clearly marked and the Belgian Army EOD Services were alerted to pick up these vintage rounds........

Lying on my map of Bastogne, a US 60mm HE Mortar Round and a German 37mm FLAK round, unearthed after 60 years.....

Surfin' @ 60MPH

At the end of August and early September 2004, a very international group of re-enactors joined up to commemorate the 60th anniversary of the liberation of France and Belgium in 1944. An amazing convoy of 2nd Armored Division marked vehicles followed the same route as that division had done in the summer of 1944, receiving a tremendous reception by the locals along the way......

Kenneth Lewis, author of 'Doughboy to GI' and owner of Norman D Landing Militaria surfin' at the front of an M8 Armored Car, somewhere in Belgium....

'I did D-Day, 6th June 1944'

On the Trigger Time Forum, a posting from Terry related the story of a 29th Vet handing out stickers saying 'I did D-Day'. Having teamed up as usual with the 29th Inf Div Vets for the Normandy Commemorations in 1999, I took a picture of this old warrior clearly making that same statement on the back of his jacket. The image was taken in Grandcamp-Maisy, just next to the monument dedicated to CMH winner, Sgt Frank PEREGORY, 116Inf.

29th, Let's Go!!!
